All their sport and life stories , and all their glories, cups and medals are slowly erased from memories despite the fact that the world has never experienced such famous sporting couple before. [00:26] The couple, both born in Moravia, won 7 Olympic medals between them.[00:32] They kept winning European and national championships, they kept breaking the world and the Czechoslovakian records.

{Emil Zatopek]
Every year there was a race in the Moravian town ZLIN. Anybody could participate, either willingly or otherwise. I was never attracted to that. I was more interested in the college studies, and work in the factory. [00:55] In my last academic year I got involved with a group of friends. Our educator was very sporty. His name was LINHART. He gathered us and told us about a race taking place in ZLIN. He ordered us to participate, [01:10] unless any of us was ill. So I put my hand to say that I wasn’t well. He asked me what was wrong with me. I said I had a problem with my knee. He said that I had to see a doctor. Doctor came, checked me and said that my knee was OK.[01:23] He said that it was good for my health to exercise. The educator immediately told me off for trying to skive. He was angry with me and I realised I had to do something against my will. [01:38] So I decided to take a revenge, run as fast as I could and win the race. I did not win, but I was second. Our educator was emotional about my success and was getting credit for it.

[narrator]
Emil was born 19th September 1922 in KOPRIVNICE, seventh child out of eight. He was a member of a poor family and showed no interest in sport.[02:28] His destiny was shaped by a sheer chance. If he were not at BATA establishment, and did not run his first race at nineteen years of age, then he would never become such a sporting legend.

At the same date, year and month was born a girl Dana INGROVA. She was a daughter of an army officer. Her home town was UHERSKE HRADISTE. [03:11] There, she was a member of the gymnastic club SOKOL, she also played a hand ball and in the same town she passed her A-levels. She wanted to be a teacher, but she could continue her studies till after the war.[03:20] And that time, when she was 24, she tried throwing a javelin at an athletic summer camp.

I have a disadvantage comparing with Dana. She comes from South Moravia, a place of many vineyards and wine cellars. [04:06] The local drink there is wine. I am from North Moravia, OSTRAVA region, there are no vineyards. The local drink there is beer.[04:13] Dana doesn’t like beer, she claims it makes one stupid and it isn’t good for me. Her conclusion was that wine makes one to sing, beer makes one stupid.
04:29
[narrator]
Zatopek deliberately chose hard training conditions. He ran around horse stables. He ran on hard surfaces wearing heavy boots. [04:39] He knew the full meaning of such hard exercises. He knew the consequences when he put on running shoes and enter the stadium.

In the training camp he made the exercises even harder . He ran in every weather, day and night, with a torch in his hand. [04:57]

[Dana Zatopek]
We often trained together, and on many occasions our training ended in arguments. Emil, for instance, kept circling around the stadium while I was throwing a javelin. [05:11] Then suddenly he would stop and started giving me instructions how to throw. Then he demonstrated his technique which was pathetic. Long distance runners cannot do anything else.Apart from running Emil was useless in other sports like gymnastics or anything else.
05:26
05:27
[EZ singing]
“My darling, my little girl I give her my heart, I give her my heart” . [05:42] I sing out of key, but I sing. Dana is a good singer, but she doesn’t sing. [05:51]
05:56
[narrator]
They live in a Prague region named TROJA in a house which they built with a help from athletic friends. They don’t have children but it’s a long time since they worried about it. [06:07] “Our nation will not die out because of us”, they claim. They have each other. Dana called him gently TOPKA, and he calls her DUSINKO [my little soul] or MACEK, sometimes MAC. [06:21]
{EZ sings]
“Grass doesn’t grow here, only beyond the water. That’s where the young ROZNOV men are riding horses. Tralala, tralala, tralalalalal. Tralalalalalalala.[06:39] They are riding, but just those who have feathers in their hats. Tralala tralala tralalalalalalala, tralalalalalalalalala tralalalalalalalalalala.[06:55]

The wine is good. Dana will like it.

[commentator]
The Czechoslovakian runner has already overtaken some runners by one lap. The second half of the race, which is usually fiercely competitive, was for Emil Zatopek a finish without challenge. Finish runner HIETAN gave up the race and Zatopek finished 200 metres ahead of the French athlete MIMOUN. He won in a style Olympic games had never experienced before. 07:34

Dana likes wine, but white wine doesn’t agree with her. It upsets her gallbladder, so she prefers red wine. [07:45]

Emil’s face always showed a maximum determination. His grimace was famous. Some spectators expected that he would fall down any second.[08:10] He always laughed about that. He would say:”Dear friends, try to run 5 kilometres under 14 minutes and look like films stars at the same time.[08:20]

In 1952 we were going to the Helsinki Olympic games. It was a dramatic departure, because Emil decided not to go. The reason was that Standa JUNGVIRT was not allowed to go. There were political reasons. [08:455] In the morning, when we were boarding a bus, we discovered that neither Emil nor Standa were joining us. It was very sad. [09:00] We saw Emil and Standa walking to the training ground through Prague region PETRIN. We stayed on the bus. I lost my voice.[09:12] I was really worried what would happen next. The bus was in a complete silence. We all felt very stressed.09:22

All spectators recognize him. They cheer him like one of their own. They watch him crossing the finishing line, an army officer Emil Zatopek has won.

In the 5 kilometres final I won the second gold medal. The next day was an assessment of the previous day. The team leader addressed everybody with the news that Emil won the second gold medal. He pointed out that the winner had some behaviour problems, otherwise he could be a good representative of our country. He added that it is very difficult to correct bad manners caused by a bad upbringing.

68 best marathon runners started the very difficult race. From the beginning all spectator focused on the competitor with a number 903.
10:38
10:39
[EZ]
What was very weird was the fact that it was my very first marathon I had ever ran. [10:47]Our team leaders asked me whether I knew how to run it. I told them that it didn’t bother me. All press media made a top favourite English runner Jim PETERS, number 187. [11:02] I thought that if he were a favourite , then he must have known how to run the race. I decided to run by his side to help me out[11:08]
11:10
[narrator]
The race continues in the street. English runner Jim Peters tries to move from the runners. But Emil Zatopek is interfering with his plan, he keeps always within his sight.

So I kept following him with a Swedish runner JANSSON. At 16th kilometre we caught up with him. I looked at him, he liked completely different comparing what he looked like when we started. [11:34] I saw the signs of tiredness in his face. I came to conclusion that he overdid it. So I wondered what would happen to me and Jansson. [11:49] I told him IT IS VERY FAST, ISN’T IT? “No, this is the right pace”, he answered. I started being concerned. [12:01] And I asked him in English ARE YOU SURE OF IT? He got fed up with me, so he moved on the other side of the road.[12:17] He only managed to the 35th kilometre. I was determined to survive. I felt unwell, my legs were terribly aching.12:28] But I managed all right, I entered the stadium and Finish spectators were so ecstatic, they cheered me like I was their own. [12:38] I heard the music, people applauded. And I was running for my third gold medal. Such moment is unforgettable.
12:52
[narrator]
Now we see the best of the best. 70,000 spectators call out one name. They watch the holder of 3 golden Olympic medals crossing the finishing line. He has achieved an unbelievable success in the new record time.

The national daily RUDE PRAVO had a big heading THE WORLD SUCCESS OF EMIL ZATOPEK WHO WON THIRD GOLD MEDAL IN MARATHON. At the same time a case was pending how to punish me for disrupting the state representation.
13:26 That was at the ministry of defence. The chief of staff was away, so in his place was in charge of the case general KRATOCHVIL. [13:39] He arrived to his office and looked at the papers. He saw the high praises of me. Then he took some official documents where he saw the note about my punishment for disrupting the state representation. [13:54] He got confused and called his secretary. She was a friend of mine. She told me about it later. [14:00] She said that the general wondered whether there were 2 Zatopeks. She told him that there was only 1 Zatopek. He tore the paper, not Rude Pravo, but the official document. So I escaped the punishment. 14:18 So it had a happy ending after all.14:21

About 5 years ago a professor from Japan came to see us. He wanted to do some research about Emil’s legs. Japanese always do some research. He came to our house with lots of small and big cases and cameras. Also, he had a special machine on which Emil had to step on. [14:45] The crew took lots of photos from a side, from the back , from down below, etc. They had a secretary with them who made lots of notes.14:54 I kept bringing tea and refreshments to make everybody comfortable. 15:03 When it all finished we took a collective photo. Then professor asked me whether I would also like to step on the machine. I said “Why not”.[15:15] I took off my shoes and followed his instructions. Again, he made lots of measurements and took many photos. Then he said: “You know what? You could also be a good sportswoman”.15:27 It really made me laugh. I told him he could be right, after all, I was a winner of 2 Olympic medals.15:34
15:36
[narrator]
After unexpected Emil’s victory, Dana Zatopek is about to throw her first javelin with determination to do her best. [15:43] A few years of training is now to show in her performance. 15:48
15:55
[narrator]
Dana couldn’t part for quite some time with her javelin. At Olympic games in Rome, where Emil was only an honoured guest, she, at the age of 38, won the last Olympic medal, which was silver. 16:06. Despite of those successes she was still in a shadow of Emil’s achievements. To this day she jokingly complains about it. 16:15
16:24
[narrator]
An officer Emil Zatopek belongs to the best soldiers in his unit. Besides his unquestionable determination in his athletic training he was also a great example for his work effort. He always says who doesn’t do a good work and doesn’t fulfil his tasks, cannot excel in sport. 16:42

COLONEL. They used to call me Colonel honoris causa. [16:51] Because I was always promoted after each sporting success. [16:56] But I didn’t worry about my rank. When I finished my running career I got an invitation from Indonesia. I went to see my superior officer about the invitation.[17:12] But he wasn’t enthusiastic about it, because it clashed with the date 6th of October, when I was to be promoted again. But I told him I wasn’t running any more. But he said that this time it was for my long serving 17:29

Out of blue, a few weeks before the Mexico Olympic games, our so called friends suddenly come here uninvited with tanks and cannons. There is no place for them in Mexico. 19:05 People applauded my views. Then I had a call from the ministry. I was unwanted extempore and was moved to do manual work. I had a rank of colonel. So I added to my title Colonel in reserve. So I couldn’t be an active soldier anymore. 19:29 I became a manual worker. 19:33
19:39
[narrator]
Communist regime owned up Zatopek’s achievements and for a long time they heralded them to the world. But after the September normalization the regime had no hesitation to punish their great hero. [19:49] He was made an auxiliary labourer. 19:52 So for seven years a hero of Olympic games in London and Helsinki was forced to live in a caravan in no man’s land performing a biological research.20:04 [a view of a jug with a sign] FOR THE BLUE OF HEAVEN [DZ] We never trumped up about our sporting fame. Old sportsmen are often unhappy when they later on are forgotten. [20:16] We decided to give our awards away. This is our last remaining cup. Some medals disappeared thanks to Emil’s generosity. Some were stolen, we are left with just a few. 20:35

I never thought of that before but now I am coming to the conclusion that we live in a forest where trees are falling down. [21:48] You hear about this friend or that friend who passed away. So if one wants it or not once you reach a certain age you start thinking more about your past. And there is a very little time left before the end of your life journey.
